What is self-destructing packaging?
Once upon a time, when trade developed in the 18th-19th centuries, along with the strong development of paper packaging, and carton boxes. As people realize that the environment is being destroyed by logging for paperboard, packaging manufacturers have switched from paper to using petroleum-based synthetic resins. Through the 21st century, plastic waste becomes an urgent problem. Because plastic has a long decomposition time, which can be up to 1000 years. Therefore, to protect the environment, the trend at that time was to return to using paper packaging. However, it is not a perfect solution. Since then, biodegradable packaging was born as the best solution to protect the environment
Types of self-destructing packaging today
One of the current domestic biodegradable packaging production technologies is based on technology from Symphony Environmental Technologies (UK). This technology creates a self-destructing plastic film by mixing resin and D2W additives in the production process. Bags made of this type of film will self-disintegrate into small pieces of 2-5mm within 3-6 months depending on the D2W ratio and the nature of the plastic used for production.
Another technology is the production of biomass plastic from starches such as corn, potato, cassava… Biomass plastic has just been developed but has great potential. They look and feel like traditional plastic made from petroleum. Depending on the type of biomass plastic, its ability to self-destruct is better or worse than petroleum plastic. There is also a type of biomass plastic that requires a self-destructing catalyst. However, this type of catalyst is easily found in nature. Packaging made from this plastic easily decomposes in a variety of environments including in soil, water, or compost. Therefore, they are easily accepted by consumers as environmental protection solutions.

In the food industry, there is another type of "self-destruction" that is currently in the spotlight. Those are the types of packaging, edible straws. There are 2 types of edible packaging i.e. truly edible packaging and water-soluble packaging. The truly edible packaging is made of edible films, which can be eaten as part of the product. The other type is often used for instant products such as instant noodles, cereals, etc. Water-soluble packaging usually leaves no taste and dissolves faster in hot water.
